How Prayer Journaling Helped Me Hear God More Clearly
I remember the very beginning of my journey with Christ. I was around twenty-seven and newly saved.
Most people would assume that growing up in a Christian household and spending much of my childhood overseas as a missionary kid would automatically make me a devoted follower of Jesus. But my story didn’t unfold that way. Christianity was always around me. Faith was the air I breathed. Yet having a real relationship with Him is entirely different from simply growing up around it. That’s a story for another day.
Early on, I wasn’t a confident Christian. I didn’t know the Bible well. I struggled to sit with it for long stretches, and my prayers felt painfully basic next to the seasoned believers I listened to. Those who could pray for what felt like forever, weaving Scripture into every sentence as if it came as naturally as breathing. I often wondered if I was doing it wrong, if I should somehow sound different. Looking back, I was comparing the first steps of my journey to people who had been walking with Christ for decades.
Starting with what I knew
Although I didn’t know the Bible particularly well at the time and I didn’t always know what to pray, there was one thing I did know: journaling.
I’d started writing a few years earlier, long before I became a Christian. I never considered myself a great writer, but I loved having somewhere to process life.
So one day I thought, if I struggle to pray out loud and I struggle to sit with my Bible for long periods, maybe I can just journal to God instead.
It felt natural. Instead of searching for the perfect words, I opened a notebook and started writing to Him. I wrote about everything on my heart, the questions I couldn’t shake, the fears that sat heavy, the things I was thankful for, the situations I didn’t understand. It wasn’t polished. It wasn’t impressive. But it was honest.
That became my prayer life.
Looking back, that’s one of the things I love most about God. He meets us exactly where we are. He doesn’t wait for us to have everything figured out. He simply invites us into relationship, and those journal pages became that invitation for me.
What I never expected
I never imagined where that simple decision would lead.
What started as a way to get everything off my chest slowly became something I looked forward to every morning. It wasn’t driven by guilt. It became one of my favourite parts of the day, the one quiet space where I could slow down, be completely honest, and spend time with God.
In those early years He was doing so much work in me. Old mindsets were being dismantled. Wounds were being healed. Fears were being surrendered. Chains I’d carried for years without even realising it were beginning to break.
At the time I couldn’t always see it. Spiritual growth rarely feels dramatic while you’re living it. Most days it looks ordinary: opening your Bible when you don’t feel like it, praying even when the words feel simple, and choosing to keep showing up. We often expect transformation overnight, but God usually changes us slowly. Looking back, I can see that He wasn’t just rearranging my circumstances. He was reshaping me.
A written record of His faithfulness
The most unexpected gift of prayer journaling is something I never saw coming. Without realising it, I had documented my journey with Christ.
We move through life so quickly that we rarely stop to look back. We’re focused on the next season, the next prayer request, the next thing we’re believing for. We forget to notice how much He has already done.
Every now and then I’ll pull an old journal off the shelf and read the words of the girl I used to be. I remember exactly how she felt, what she was praying about, and what felt overwhelming at the time. There are prayers I’d completely forgotten I’d prayed, some small, some that felt enormous. Written down were fears I no longer carry. Wounds that no longer hurt. Situations that once consumed my thoughts but have long since passed.
Without those journals, I honestly think I would have forgotten so much of what God has done. Prayer journaling didn’t just help me remember my prayers. It helped me remember His faithfulness. And that has become one of the greatest gifts it’s given me.
It’s one thing to know God changes us. It’s another to hold written proof of it on your bookshelf.
Why I believe every Christian should try this
People often ask me how to hear God more clearly. I’m no expert, but prayer journaling has helped me recognise His hand in my life in ways I might have otherwise missed. Not because I hear an audible voice when I write, but because it has trained me to pay attention, to notice repeated lessons, answered prayers, Scriptures that keep surfacing, and the quiet ways He has been leading me all along.
Writing also slows us down. We live in a world of constant noise, phones, messages, endless scrolling. Prayer journaling creates space to stop, reflect, and bring whatever is on our hearts before Him without distraction.
And there are no rules. Your journal doesn’t need to look beautiful. Your handwriting doesn’t need to be neat. You don’t need an expensive notebook. This isn’t about aesthetics. It’s about creating space to meet with God.
Some mornings I write several pages. Other mornings it’s half a page because that’s all I have time for. The length has never mattered. What matters is intentionally bringing my thoughts, worries, gratitude and questions to Him instead of carrying them alone.
How to begin
If you’ve never kept a prayer journal, my biggest piece of advice is simple: just start where you are, because He will meet you where you are.
Don’t wait for the perfect notebook or the perfect system. Don’t wait until you know more Scripture. Open a page, write the date, and talk to God. Sometimes I write about what I’m grateful for. Other times I write about something weighing on me or a decision I’m wrestling with. And most recently, I have started to document the visions He is giving me.
Final thoughts
If there’s one thing prayer journaling has taught me, it’s that God is always working, even when I can’t see it. There were so many seasons where I wondered whether He was listening, whether He was moving, whether my prayers were making any difference at all. Looking back now, I can see that He was faithfully working through every single one of them, often in ways I never expected.
Prayer journaling didn’t change God. What it did, was give me a written reminder that He has never once abandoned me, even in the seasons I couldn’t understand.
So if you’ve ever thought about starting a prayer journal, let this be your gentle encouragement to begin. Don’t wait until you know the Bible back to front. Don’t wait until your prayers sound like everyone else’s. Don’t wait until you feel spiritually mature enough. Start exactly where you are. Bring Him what’s on your heart, and trust that He will meet you there.
One day you’ll pick up one of those old journals and read the words of the person you used to be. You’ll remember the prayers that once felt so urgent, the fears that once felt so heavy, and the questions you were desperate for Him to answer. And then you’ll smile as you realise that while you thought you were simply filling the pages of a notebook, God was quietly writing a testimony of His faithfulness across every chapter of your life.
